| Hmm... With all the hoopla surrounding the Star Wars release, not much has been said about the release of THX 1138 last week. I had seen this movie years ago and was too young to pay attention to it. Now I think it is freaking awesome and is probably the best thing Lucas has ever shat out, aside from his input (whatever it is, my mind is murky on that right now) on the Indy trilogy. It is such a bizarre movie. Weird angles, strange plot progression, odd characters. The extreme sterility, the 1984-ish slogans, everything about it resonates really, really strong. The visual effects do not seem dated at all, in fact they feel very appropriate. There is an analog feel to everything, which seems exotic and even a bit baroque in 2004. The visual design of everything from the Officers to the "jet cars" is top-notch. There is a real creativity at work, and not just f/x for the sake of f/x. The end is kind of a giant question mark, but it is oddly moving. Now, some scenes have been digitally "enhanced" but nothing extreme. Just some background shots have been made a little more impressive. I am just totally blown away by this, and I wish to HOLY HELL that Lucas would get the stick out of his ASS and maybe try to get back to making GOOD films like this again! Oh well. Rating: 4.5
